Our Picks for May 15th – May 21st
If you don’t get out there and enjoy some of the amazing and incredibly affordable live music going on in this town in the next 6 days, we will spank you so hard … all this week in Articulate City!
Cultural Celebration: Ft. Collins Museum Indian Market
Saturday, May 17th, 10:00am – 6:00pm
Old Town Square – in the heart of Downtown Fort Collins
Why go? To experience visual arts, live music, storytelling, and much more, all while celebrating Native American history and culture. Artists will be displaying, promoting and selling fine art and folk art (and jewelry!) while a wide variety of musical acts - all with a Native flair - will be performing in the square. Hands-on art experiences for kids and Native American food round out two terrific days of heritage and history. A great family outing or solo stroll for Saturday or Sunday.
Hint: Sunday’s festivities take place from noon until 5 p.m., so if you can’t make it on Saturday, you still have a chance to enjoy the festivities!
Live Music: Glove Trucker
Friday, May 16th, 9:00pm
The Swing Station – at the stoplight in Laporte
Why go? Because we keep telling you to visit The Swing Station but we aren’t sure you believe us, and an evening with Glove Trucker just might provide one of the most fun Friday nights that you’ll ever experience. Seriously! Great country music with a sense of humor, an authentic honky tonk haven, and hopefully, a spring night that you’ll be able to enjoy by stepping out on the rather lovely porch at the venue in between sets. Go check it out. We mean it.
Cost: $5.
Live Music: Kate Laurel Smith, Rosann Winn, and Matt Campbell
Sunday, May 18th, 7:30pm
Avogadro’s Number – 605 S. Mason St.
Why go? Our friend Matt Campbell is back in town after a stint in NYC, and as is his way, he’s surrounding himself with beautiful, talented women again. Singer/songwriters Kate Laurel Smith and Rosann Winn will join Matt for a nice, mellow Sunday evening serenade. If you buy Matt a beer, he’ll tell you all about why Fort Collins is better than New York.
Cost: $5.
EVENT TEASER! Coming next week...plotting for summer vacation!
Free Event of the Week: the jimi austin
Thursday, May 15th, 9:30pm
Luscious Nectar – 222 Linden St.
Why go? You’ll get an up-close-and-personal experience with one of the hippest young indie rock bands in the region, but more importantly, you’ll get to sip a nice icy adult boozy-Slurpee-style cocktail or two while you do it. It’s spring and it’s just about time to get back to Luscious Nectar, that’s what we think. And a free show that you can rock out to should be the icing on the blender drink that takes you there Thursday.
Hint: In order to be allowed access to the show, you’ll need to be 21+ (see “boozy-Slurpee-style cocktails”, above). That said, we recommend that you order the non-alcoholic blended concoctions (then have the bartender add vodka or rum, of course. Somehow this turns out tastier than the pre-made varieties). Demand that the band play “Hairspray”, then sip slowly so your only headache is from loud pounding music, not from pounding frozen hooch through a straw.
Unusual Date Night Option of the Week: The Stanton Moore Trio
Tuesday, May 20th, 8:00pm
The Aggie Theater – 204 S. College Ave.
Why go? Because you and your beloved have always been clever enough to realize that the drummer in a band is often an overlooked diamond in the rough. Stanton Moore (the New Orleans jazz funk drummer known for his seemingly endless array of other amazing musical projects, like Galactic and Garage a Trois) is certainly not overlooked – the guy is pretty much a drum god. Not to mention a fine philanthropist who tirelessly supports his hard-hit home city by playing benefits and donating tons of time and money to local musicians. Still, if you haven’t had a chance to see him perform – and actually, even if you have – you’ll definitely have the sense that you’ve stumbled onto a really cool secret. And nothing fuels a good date night like secrets and stumbling.
Cost: $12.
